It's Official: Google AdWords Labels Are Going Green

We've been reporting about the green AdWords ad label for months now and also reported yesterday about a huge increase in the number of searchers seeing the green ad label. So we, Search Engine Land got a confirmation from Google that this is officially rolling out and replacing the yellow ad label.
The old yellow ad label:

The new green ad label:

“We regularly test ways to improve the look and feel of our search results page. We’ve been experimenting with a green search ad label and have decided to roll it out based on positive feedback from users and advertisers. Our goal is to make our results page easy to use, and our labeling clear and prominent,” a Google spokesperson told Search Engine Land.

What is quality content?

Columnist Patrick Stox takes a comprehensive look at what Google might consider to be "quality content" and adds his own thoughts and tips based on his experience in the SEO industry.

We’ve all heard that content is king and that you need to write high-quality content, or now “10x content,” as coined by Rand Fishkin. Ask SEOs what “quality content” is and you’ll receive a lot of varied and opinionated answers. Quality is subjective, and each person views it differently.
Ask SEOs what Google considers to be quality content, and you will get a lot of blank stares. I know because I like to ask this a lot.
The number one answer I get, sadly, is that content should be x number of words, where x is usually 200, 300, 500, 700, 1,000, 1,500, or 2,000. More content does not mean better content. A simple query about the age of an actor can be fully answered in a sentence and doesn’t require their life story and filmography.
Another answer I receive is that the content should be “relevant.” The problem with this is that low-quality pages can be relevant as well.
Other SEOs I’ve asked have given amazingly detailed answers from patents or ideas from machine learning about word2vec, RankBrain, deep learning, count-based methods and predictive methods.
Is there a right answer?

Apple Maps becomes a platform with new extensions for third-party apps

The move parallels Apple's decision to open up Siri and Messages to developers.

Apple is opening up Apple Maps to third-party developers with new “extensions.” This is parallel to announcements made during today’s WWDC keynote for Messages and Siri .
In addition to a forthcoming “beautiful redesign,” developers can integrate their apps directly into Maps:
Now open to developers with new extensions, apps like OpenTable can integrate bookings right into Maps, and services like Uber and Lyft can make it easier for users to book a ride, without ever leaving the Maps app. Maps is even smarter with new intelligence that proactively delivers directions to where you most likely want to go next, based on your routine or appointments on your calendar. Once a route is planned, Maps can search along the route for gas stations, restaurants, coffee shops and more and provides an estimate of how the stop impacts the length of your trip.
Apple’s Eddy Cue suggested a scenario where a user can search for and book a restaurant, call a ride with Uber and pay through Apple Maps.
A year ago in June, at WWDC, Apple introduced public transit information. At that time, Apple’s Craig Federighi mentioned the following stats:
  • 5 billion map user requests per week
  • Apple Maps is used 3.5x more than the “next most-used mapping app” (i.e., Google)
There were no similar stats or updates today, however.
Some of the improved functionality announced for Maps plays catch-up with Google, but extensions is unique in its transformation of Apple Maps into a platform. As with Siri, Apple hopes that developers will help the company make Maps a richer and more differentiated product vs. competitors.
There was no discussion today about whether Map extensions were cross-platform or just for iOS developers. My guess is that it will be iOS only to start but will eventually come to the PC.

Google Again Says: We Don't Use Social Media For Ranking

https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.seroundtable.com/google-social-1465301116.jpg

Every several months or so the topic of Google and social signals comes up and each time it gets into a Googlers hands, they say no - it is not used directly for ranking.
Gary Illyes said it again on Twitter. The question was "Some controversy over whether Google takes social into account for SEO — perhaps Louis Gray will settle this in our next session! #social16" Gary responded, "the short version is, no, we don't."
Here is a video he referenced from Matt Cutts back in 2014 and it has not changed:

Having Issues With Your Google Disavow File? Upload One Line At A Time

Like it or not, many SEOs use the disavow backlinks feature within Google which launched in 2012 mostly based on webmaster feedback.
But sometimes the disavow file can cause a headache for webmasters. When you have weird characters in your URLs, sometimes Google can confuse them and not disavow them or show errors.
John Mueller of Google responded to one such complaint with advice on how to test it. He said on Twitter to "try to submit a file with just that line, then rewrite the line." Use this method to check which URLs are causing you problems and then fix them one by one. Sounds like this method can take some time with debugging but I don't know if there are any better ways?
He added that "sometimes special characters are tricky" for Google's disavow system to handle.
